Bottom up community action on renewable energy
I’ve been watching the good folk of Yackandandah developing energy independence for years. It started when I first saw cute “golden yaks” on fences in this quiet country village when visiting family there.
From a buying coop to a community NFP it’s been exciting to watch what this “small group of committed citizens” is doing to improve their world through entrepreneurial local action.

Not only have they seeded Indigo Power, now they’re using crowd-based capital raising (enabled by the growth of crowd-funding platforms) to become an energy retailer. They’ve expanded their focus beyond “Yack” to the whole of north-east Victoria.
Like other co-ops turned retailers, their goal is multi-valued. They want to keep energy spending in their region and invested in local jobs instead of paying big, remote “gentailers”.
